Jasmine has had a turbulent life ever since she was a toddler, and her timid attitude does not help. Due to several unfortunate incidents, she was taken from her mother and placed in the foster care system, where she was later fostered by a family that cared more about the monthly paychecks than the child they took in. Years later, she found herself back in the system, where she celebrated her 18th birthday. This milestone would be a joyous occasion for any other teenager, but for an orphan, this day filled her with dread.
A youth assistance program helped her adjust to the adult world, but it does little to fix the loneliness she's so accustomed to. Same empty existence, just more work and responsibilities.
Unbeknownst to Jasmine, her meandering life will soon take a drastic... and mystical turn.
Jasmine and her fairy godparent Tye-Die are the main characters of my story 'Twisted Luck.' She is my second and most polished human model so far. I have learned so much about animating facial expressions and rigging humans because of her!
Jasmine is a kind, yet timid girl who's a bit of a people pleaser. Her upbringing in the foster care system has given her trust and commitment issues that make it hard for her to form and keep relationships. Thus, she lives a solitary life. I wanted to convey her meek personality through her soft appearance. Her passive demeanor strongly contrasts with Tye-Die's more abrasive attitude.
Since Jasmine will wear various outfits, I made her nude in the base reference sheet. Designing her wasn't super difficult since she's just a stylized human. The hardest parts to model were the curly hair and wide eyes. I made her eyes spheres instead of plains, which I now think made the process trickier. Since her eyes are so large, it would have been better if I made them plains with blend shap
Not counting outfits, Jasmine consists of 15,062 faces (30,028 tris. & 15,162 verts.), making her a moderately high-poly model paired with clothes.
Jasmine rigged and rendered
Here is a short animation featuring Jasmine and Tye-Die! In this project, the characters are played by actors named Amari and Jackal. Of course, they are the same 3D models, I just thought an interview would be a fun way to practice lip syncing.
Animation Note: I wanted Jasmine's (Amari's) shirt to move, but it took FOREVER to render. It already took weeks to render Tye's fur, so a silky shirt was pushing it. I had a choice between waiting a month to complete rendering or having a rigid shirt...
